On the brink of a new era of possibilities, rethinking the electronics industry became a must. Devices are today generating 50M tons of e-waste each year. Of this waste, only 20% is recycled. It is time for greener tech to be the standard, not an option. Carbon fiber might be just the solution for that. This shift could reduce the materials required by 33% while saving up to 100M tons of the Earth’s resources every year in production.
Carbon Mobile took up the challenge of closing the loop of e-waste and reinventing how electronics are designed, used and recycled. Using a carbon fiber composite, they developed the world’s first carbon fiber smartphone, cutting down 5% plastic use and CO2 emissions in delivery. Not only Carbon 1 MK II comes with a stronger structural skin, lighter and thinner, it was built with repairability as an essential feature, to increase longer life cycles of their products.
The journey was long and full of challenges. In fact one of their biggest challenges was connectivity. Their main material, carbon fiber, is an electromagnetic conductor, which means it blocks all radio signals. To eliminate this connectivity issue, HyRECM, a new radio friendly cutting edge technology was developed by their team, changing science forever.
The next step would be for other companies, largest OEMs to follow their steps and think of a greener way of producing their devices. Companies can buy licenses from Carbon Mobile to create a carbon version of their devices to be environment friendly and help close the loop of e-waste. For instance, OEM’s often release their devices in different colors to support certain events and/or to bring awareness to something. They can also give the carbon version a try as it might attract people who care about recycling and clean environment.
It is definitely not the end of the journey for Carbon Mobile, as they are committed to being the world’s first plastic neutral electronics company, one of their near future plans is to replace carbon fibers with greener bio-based alternatives, making the world’s first carbon neutral smartphone a real possibility.
Here at MI as an environmentally-friendly company, we promote sustainability and support all organizations that are trying to make a change and shift to greener technologies. It is our duty to promote greener concepts and help tackle environmental issues.
