Facebook has unveiled a new corporate name: Meta.
Facebook decided that it’s time for a change and are today restructuring their company, expanding their line of products and services from the concept of being social media giant to a builder of future technologies.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name and said the existing brand could not “possibly represent everything they are doing today, let alone in the future”, and needed to change. The company also replaced its corporate sign, which featured a picture of a “thumbs up” outside of its California headquarters, with its new logo : a blue infinity sign.
Rebranding is the process of changing the corporate image of an organization. It is a market strategy of giving a new name and symbol to an already-established brand. The goal here is to create a different identity for a brand from its competitors in the market.
Facebook showed a series of concept videos that highlighted its vision for Metaverse, such as sending a holographic image of yourself to a concert with a friend attending in real life and sitting around virtual meeting tables with remote colleagues.
It is unclear what Mr. Zuckerberg plans to do next. It seems, however, that running Instagram and Facebook are no longer his passions; he would rather focus on creating Virtual Worlds which he thinks will transform the human experience. The constant criticism of how he runs his social media companies must be draining. This restructure may give him the ability to focus more on the segments of the company that excite him. The division makes sense in that respect. However, we’ll have to wait and see whether people will go along with it.
